The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is thrilled to announce the successful acquisition of $6.32 million in funding from Lotterywest to support various community projects and initiatives. This significant investment will facilitate the scoping, design, and construction of vital initiatives aimed at enriching public spaces, enhancing community amenities and fostering youth engagement.

Recently, a decision was made by the Director of Liquor Licensing to adjust liquor restrictions within our community, following an inquiry into alcohol-related harm in Derby and the sale of packaged liquor. The inquiry, which involved consultation with various stakeholders, including licensees, calls for more liquor restrictions, intended to prevent and reduce problematic alcohol related behaviour and harm. Recognising the high rates of AOD abuse in the Kimberley region, the position statement reinforces the Shire’s commitment to addressing the significant health, social and economic challenges associated with AOD harm. The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is considering a lease proposal involving two locations situated on the western end of the Derby Jetty (designated as “Areas 2 and 3”) The Shire is providing notice of the proposal and inviting submissions (as per Section 3.58 of the Local Government Act 1995). Submissions can be made prior to 4.30pm on Thursday 29th February 2024.

On Tuesday the 13th Feb, the water service will be lowered on Alfonsas Street, causing the street to be closed for most of the day and reopening on Wednesday the 14th Feb for normal traffic. It is hoped that the street reconstruction will commence in April, with work comprised of lowering of the surface of the road to get better drainage outcomes, along with kerbing and crossover installations. The Fitzroy Crossing oval will soon be lit up by new lights and technology thanks to State Government funding. The upgrades are part of a $4 million project funded by the State Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries as part of the election commitment grant program.

The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley's Aboriginal Environmental Health team attended the Mowanjum Community Event on Monday the 29th January, where they were recognised for outstanding achievement in the community. The team had a blast at the event, which had food, games, music and a cultural performance called Junba. We had new members of the team that got to meet everyone in the community and the team had our new bouncing castle up for the kids to jump on. The afternoon was an opportunity for organisations to touch base with the community and start the year off. What a great event!

Citizen of the Year 2024 - announced! Last Friday at the Australia Day Breakfast at the Sporties, the Citizen of the Year awards were presented to outstanding citizens in our community.
