Library Services

The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley provides library and information services through the Derby Public Library as well as the Fitzroy Crossing Public Library. At each of the libraries, there is a great variety of books, audiobooks and DVD’s. We provide a wide range selection of catalogued items to accommodate all of our patrons. Members are also able to access a number of free Databases and eResources. Please see library staff for registration details.

The hunt for FORM's ScribblersFest Golden Feather has begun! From now until 25 October 2024, bring the whole family to the Derby Library children’s and young adult sections to search for special Scribblers feather-shaped bookmarks. Find a shiny Gold, Silver, or limited-edition Fuchsia Feather to WIN exciting prizes, or decorate a White Feather for the chance to win a spot prize. Opening Hours

Derby Public Library

The Derby Public Library Hours will be trialling new opening hours from 21 October 2024
Changes include opening earlier in the morning, with a half hour closure during the day. All programs and activities will stay at the same times. During this trial period, officers will collect customer feedback and visitation statistics for review. Please take note of the new hours starting soon and we look forward to seeing you!

Fitzroy Crossing Public Library

Due to the Flood Recovery efforts the library has been temporarily closed to facilitate the ‘Flood Hub’.

A small selection of books and DVDs are available to borrow in the Fitzroy Visitors Centre.

You can request a transfer of an item from Derby to Fitzroy Crossing.  Items can be reserved by contacting the Derby Library on 9191 0999 or via the online catalogue.  Items which are available can be viewed on the online catalogue here

Members can also access resources online via the “Free Resources from Home” as listed below.

Our services

Inter-Library Loans

Derby and Fitzroy Crossing Libraries are able to search a greater database of books within Western Australia to borrow books from other libraries within the state. If there is a particular item that yo are unable to locate within the local library, ask staff and they can arrange an inter-library loan.

Internet and Wi-Fi Access

At our libraries we offer free use of Internet and Wi-Fi. Please be advised that Terms and Conditions of use apply.

At our libraries you will find a number of noticeboards including;

With these noticeboards we endeavour to keep our community and patrons as up to date as we can.

Members living remote and isolated locations within the Shire can borrow more items for longer periods.

To Join

Shire Residents:

Membership is free to permanent residents within the Shire. Library staff will need to sight photo identification and evidence of current postal or email address. Forms of Identification include current;

  • Australian Driver's Licence with photograph,
  • Current Passport, or
  • West Australian Proof of Age Card

Visitors:

Visitors are offered with the same free service, however there are different types of identification required. Please speak to our Library staff for more information.

To Borrow

Once you join, you will be given a personal membership card which will allow you to borrow items. This membership card will also give you access to our online catalogue which allows you to reserve items that are currently out on loan, and to renew items that you currently have on loan. You will need to check with staff for a username and password

To Return

The return of items by the due date is appreciated. Overdue items must be returned or renewed before any additional loans can be issued.

Free Resources from Home

The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley Library members can access thousands of free eResources by using a host of different services all of which have been supplied by the State Library of Western Australia.

Libby is the mobile app to access the OverDrive collection of eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines titles available to Western Australian Public Libraries.  Access to Libby eBooks, eMagazines and eAudiobooks can be found here and then follow the instructions for creating an account at here.
BorrowBox is an award winning Australian app that enables library members to browse, borrow and enjoy eBooks and eAudiobooks on their device for limited periods. Access to BorrowBox can be found here.
On demand videos - available 24/7, free from your public library via kanopy. Sign up to kanopy here. You will need your library card and email address.

Busy things is an online resource for the early years that includes 115+ fun learning activities that help children learn important skills in the key learning areas of creative development, problem solving, numeracy, communication, language and literacy. Login here with your Library card number.
Story Box Library provides a place where children can connect and engage with the wonderful world of Australian Children's Literature. Listen to stories read by Australian storytellers who add meaningful and entertaining readings. Supported by WA's Better Beginnings program. Log into Story Box here. 
Overdrive Kids offers a safe browsing and reading zone. Showcasing only children's content, kids get to the titles they want faster, then browse, sample, place holds and borrow.
