Derby’s volunteers were the stars of the evening at the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley’s Thank a Volunteer Dinner, supported by Department of Communities, held on Saturday night at the Derby Airport. The event honoured the vital contributions of local volunteers, with five awards presented to individuals who have gone above and beyond in service to the community.

In a special highlight, Councillor Andrew Twaddle received a National Medal 1st Clasp for his many years of dedication as a volunteer fire and emergency responder. The award was presented by the Minister for Emergency Services, Hon. Stephen Dawson MLC, alongside representatives from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) District Officers Benjamin Muller and Gareth Cornish.

The evening brought together volunteers from a range of Derby organisations for a night of food, entertainment and connection. Attendees were treated to a glamour-themed night with the red carpet rolled out, entertainment by local musicians and food and drinks provided, with a surprise short film that shined a spotlight on the incredible efforts of our local volunteers in the Shire.

Hon. Stephen Dawson was joined by Divina D’Anna, Member for Kimberley, Shire President Peter McCumstie and Deputy President Geoff Haerewa as well as Shire Councillors Wayne Foley and Andrew Twaddle in celebrating Derby’s volunteer heroes.

Speaking at the event, President Peter McCumstie commended the incredible efforts of the volunteers.

“You are the ones who step up, who give your time freely, who go above and beyond to make a difference and we are eternally grateful for your selfless service,” he said.

The evening also provided an opportunity for Derby’s volunteers to connect and unwind in recognition of their hard work.

“This event is a small way of showing our gratitude for the big impact our volunteers have on the lives of so many,” said Acting CEO Tamara Clarkson.

Shire of Derby/West Kimberley extends its heartfelt thanks to all volunteers for their unwavering dedication to the community and will continue to support and celebrate their efforts in any way we can.
