Kimberley Moonrise Girl

By Mark Norval

This sculpture is a tribute to all of the women who live in the Kimberley. It is a portrait of Kirstene Jack, a local Derby girl. Kirstene has an ancestry, which includes people from the Walmajarri, Nykina, Mangala and Ngarinyin language groups. She is a visual artist in Derby and faces the hardships of Kimberley life with an outgoing approach and an effervescent sense of humour. A halo has been positioned around Kirstene’s head as mark of honour for all Kimberley women who have suffered and conquered adversity.  Kimberley Moonrise Girl has been positioned on the northern side of the Marsh to take full advantage of the superb moonrises and sunsets that occur in Derby.
