26 June 2024 For immediate release
The Shire of Derby West Kimberley wrote to the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Richard Marles, Minister for Defense to follow up on enquires made over recent months in relation to the renewal of the lease held with the Commonwealth of Australia, for the Civil land side facilities at Curtin.
The Shire have been formally advised by the Commonwealth of Australia Property Managers and the office of the Minister for Defense that a renewal of the lease option is no longer available and as such will not be renewed. Shire President Peter McCumstie stated:
“Although we are disappointed that our request for an extension of the Curtin Civil lease has been denied we understand that the focus on Curtin as a Defense Base has changed over recent years and this along with not being able to attract RPT or other commercial use at the facilities at Curtin Civil Facility makes it hard to justify future civil use at Curtin.”
President McCumstie further stated that the Shire will continue to lobby and work with the Department of Transport to grow the existing air services at Derby Airport with the long-term goal being to have larger aircraft servicing the RPT needs of the Shire.
