After months of dedicated efforts and community support, Derby Nicholson Square Oval has been officially approved for hosting games this season!
Following the devastation caused by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Ellie and subsequent flooding in 2023, the oval faced significant challenges, including damage to its water source and playing field. These issues have now been resolved, with two large water tanks now in place.
Peter McCumstie, Shire President, expressed gratitude for the community's support throughout the restoration process. "The installation of these water tanks and the wonderful work of the works crew that have been crucial in preparing Nicholson Oval for the upcoming AFL season," he stated. "We are thrilled to announce that the oval is now ready to host home games, providing our local teams and fans with a safe and welcoming environment to enjoy the sport they love."
Mr McCumstie also acknowledged and thanked the West Kimberley Football League (WKFL) for their invaluable support and whose collaboration was instrumental in expediting the approval process. "The WKFL has been a pivotal partner in our efforts to restore Nicholson Oval," he remarked. "Their commitment to supporting local football has been unwavering, and we look forward to a successful season ahead."
The approval of Nicholson Oval for home games signifies a significant milestone for the Derby community, reinforcing its vibrant sports culture and providing local teams (go Tigers!) with equal opportunities to compete on home ground.
